The Foolishness of Man

So I guess you've heard alcoholic drinks are to carry new warning labels in a move to make drinkers more aware of the risks. What??? Prior to this, the British Government issued new guidance saying pregnant women and those trying to conceive should not drink at all!! Say What?? The move the Government said comes amid fears about the rise in binge drinking and an increase in alcohol-related diseases and death. Ok.. so the Government's response to this is therefore to baby sit us all! Please tell me what the sense in this is? So drink labels will now carry big fat stickers with the warning 'Alcohol kills' or some such nonsense! Much like ciggies do at the moment... O I forgot to mention that the label will include 1 more warning 'Alcohol is dangerous for Pregnant women and nursing mothers'! OTT you say? I agree!
Now it's said that that the recommended 'dosage' is 4 units and 3 units per day for men and women respectively. Thus all bottles must carry the unit measurement on them.. however it's not that simple as units are dependent on the alcohol content/percentage, so does this then not confuse the general populace more? I give up! I think the government needs to butt out of people's lives and let them live as they wish.. hey if a few people (in 2005 figures were 3,884 men and 1,873 women) want to kill themselves.. I say let them! Might free up the earth's limited resources. Sounds cold.. but hey the amount of time and money we 'waste' on these people could be better directed to motherless and at risk kids, as well as the aged and homeless! These group of people will definitely better appreciate the assistance given them.. and might even pray for you!
What about me you say? Do I drink? Yes I do.... now and again... always have a bottle or two at home.. but I don't go crazy! Infact I can go months without a drop.. and trust me it's not like am trying to quit drinking. But the truth is you can't stop people from drinking, like you can't stop them from smoking. I have a couple of friends who smoke and each time they bring out their pack of fags (as in pack of cigarettes - what did you think I was talking about?? Duh!) I point out to them the LARGE black sticker which carries the warning 'SMOKING KILLS'! They remind me that there are people who inhale (and that's what I can call it ) 40-50 sticks a day who are in their 60s or 70s and hale and hearty! ... Well, I can't argue with that... as long as you're not blowing your cancer breath in my very pretty face! Afterall second smoke aka passive smoking kills too! Anyway where am i going to with all this... it's time for people to take responsibility for their own lives and not expect to be hand-fed from birth to death! Grip the hand of life like a man (or woman) and make the most of everything that gets thrown (or not) at you. See what you get when you visit my blog... life lessons from 'boo... cool eh? O and you're welcome

Now onto more serious issues.... Apparently in Nigeria, the outgoing President (Baba who REALLY needs to retire to his farm ASAP and enjoy what's left of his life after 8 years in office) as a leaving present (3 days to departure) hiked fuel (petrol) prices up from N65 to N75 per litre (which to us in the UK is increasing prices from £0.26 to £0.30 per litre ... if only we could actually pay that for fuel... o well) a 15.4 % margin, all as a revenge tactic against the incoming President Umaru Yar'Adua! Seems like Baba wanted his 'son in whom he is pleased' (or shall I say 'was') to appoint a couple of 'his own' people into ministerial positions and the son kicked against it... Well Baba as we know was not pleased and it is said he stopped speaking to him... such childish behaviour from an 'elder'!.. Apparently, the fuel hike was supposed to have been kept quiet until after the inauguration on Tuesday May 29th (yes tomorrow) ... But alas, bad news always, always gets out FAST!.. Just you ask Tony (the globe trotter) Blair! Obasanjo says he had made the change now to avoid saddling the new government with an unsustainable level of subsidy on prices.. yeah, whatever!
Well we hope Yar'Adua delivers all that he has promised in terms of Education, Health and Improving Social standing. Being the first graduate President that Nigeria has had, let us hope that he makes good his promises and does well for the country as opposed to all his predecessors.

O still on Nigerian matters, the joke of the day is in Abia state. Theodore Orji, an associate of Outgoing governor Orji Uzor Kalu, who won last month's elections for state governor (while in police custody, courtesy of the EFCC - have you ever heard such rubbish), was sworn in as Governor days earlier than scheduled! He was freed on bail last Friday, ahead of tomorrow's inauguration ceremony, and handed the mantle of the state by his 'friend' Governor Kalu (who has also been suspected of corruption) who had earlier stepped down and has now reportedly fled the country! Well he obviously had to, his immunity was coming to an end and in order to have continuity (in corruption at least) he had to get his 'man' in early enough to protect him....and to cover his (Kalu's) backside. Afterall.. ALL the evidence will be covered now!!! i hope they pay for their crimes.. all the countries 'hiding' them should arrest them ALL!!.. You listening UK and USA... cos these are the countries they are most likely to run to and spend their ill-gotten funds! Remember fellas.. Everyday is for the thief and one day for the owner of the house!

Well what can I say, tomorrow marks the beginning of another milestone in Nigeria's life... we pray and hope that this new chapter brings renewed hope and concrete evidence of delivered promises. Here's to our new President... Umaru Yar'Adua. May you prove yourself worthy for this great role. May your years as President for Nigeria be years filled with great hope and more importantly evidence of good things and even better things to come!

Adios people..

- 'boo.
